I actually wanted a CD player and CD’s, is more affordable an a more efficient physical media. U can rip the music and have it in your phone or hip iPod. U can share it and whatever, and it will still have good definition. Even tho I find Mini-Disc the most good looking format I must admit CDs are the way to go.
But I got a Vinyl player, why?
Because I like nice things and experiences, and the reissue of the Soundburger on Yellow already got me on the edge of falling into the vinyl rabbit hole a year ago. And it just happed that I got my first LP and had not a player around, that was the perfect excuse to take a step forward.
I have a set of rules that try to find the balance on how I support, and consume arts, these help me keep a “healthy” relationship with consumption, let me share them with u:
-I should not feel bad about investing in art, being this exhibitions, concerts, cool merch, whatever that I consider art. because I am an artist and is my duty to support and consume out off my own guild.
“Get that handmade cup, get that print, go to that play”
-I should prioritise newcomers and artists in need, no big time or money for dead artists and no wealthy capitalist artist neither.
“no bad bunny merch, but cool shit from a punk band is allowed”
-I should remember who I am getting art from. Maybe not always the name, but the time, the adventure, the context. Because art is not a product but an experience, that I choose to caress, enjoy and keep on my memory.
“Never ever say, I dont know where I got this from”

I’m so amazed of the mechanical properties of how vinyl players work. The experience of having something in your hands that u know u can enjoy as long as u care for it, and most importantly I CAN FINALLY SEE WHATS BEHIND THE MAIN ARTWORK OF AN ALBUM. I can appreciate not only the sound but also the conceptuality of the “gestaltung” of the album, it’s art, words, playfulness, quality etc.
The ritualistic part of cleaning, organising and caring about the media, adds a layer of reflection. I know this sounds hippie, but watering flowers makes me bloom too.
Conclusion:
Im happy that finally I can be the person that doesn’t get a shirt of the band at the entrance venue of the concert, but the one that gets the vinyl, hipstermaxxing over here.
