this post has 2 sides, one is the cool film photos (my first time working with Portra 400 and edited on Photometer) and the second one text is a comment that I left in a YouTube video. They dont have to do much with each other but I almost never leave comments and took some time to write, so I decided to share it here. Some context follows:

Inclusive language has been “debated” since its existence and in the Spanish-speaker community there has been some turmoil about the non-binary use of sufix and pronouns. I found a video talking about it and making it sound as if “the language doesn’t carry much meaning so it doesn’t matter that much, it was a philosophical essay so it tried to be as less political as possible. So I wrote this big ass commentary, that some people happened to like and leave very positive replies while other just did not get the point, most probably because they did not wanted to. whatever here is the gossip in Spanish and also translated. It might not make much sense if u dont know how Spanish grammar works, but that’s why the Photos are there!

Quisiera compartiros un par de reflexiones mías acerca del uso del lenguaje, como poliglota y persona no binaria.

-Nosotres forjamos el lenguaje, el diccionario no dicta la lengua, la documenta.

*I’d like to share a couple of my reflections on the use of language, as a polyglot and a non-binary person.*

– *We shape language; the dictionary doesn’t dictate it, it documents it.*

-Las instituciones y/o grupos Politicos pueden llegar a abusar el lenguaje y convertirlo en una herramienta para asociar un concepto a una palabra a su conveniencia a costa del bienestar ajeno, esta decisión es dictada por grupos pequeños con mucho poder, casi siempre con una intención plenamente política y destructiva. Como la creación de castas, razas, grupos alienados etc. Ejemplo: La palabra Zurdo es generalmente utilizada para describir cual de tus manos es dominante, pero ciertos grupos politicos, utilizan su poder para cambiar el significado a un termino despectivo hacia la política basada en la empatía y no en el capital. Simplificando así un concepto complejo, extrayendo las capas en las cuales uno puede empatizar, llevando a un destilamiento conceptual, donde la persona que no esta conmigo, esta en mi contra.

– *Institutions and/or political groups can abuse language and turn it into a tool to associate a concept with a word for their own convenience, at the expense of others’ well-being.* This decision is dictated by small groups with a lot of power, almost always with a fully political and destructive intent. Like creating castes, races, alienated groups, etc.  

Example: The word _zurdo_ [left-handed] is generally used to describe which of your hands is dominant, but certain political groups use their power to change its meaning into a derogatory term for politics based on empathy rather than capital. Thus they simplify a complex concept, stripping away the layers where one can empathise, leading to a conceptual distillation where the person who isn’t with me is against me.

-Los colectivos discriminados, a diferencia, toman esta palabra que se implantó en el idioma y la reapropian para que pierda su poder violento. Este proceso si bien sigue teniendo un trasfondo politico, es diferente al anterior. Porque el término despectivo se esparce de una minoría despectiva a la mayoría general, con poder e influencia (de arriba hacia abajo). Mientras que la apropiación y creación de lenguaje inclusivo nace de estos grupos discriminados que esparcen el termino de una minoría afectada a una mayoría general (de abajo hacia arriba). Como el ejemplo del video, donde “queer” fue reapropiado por las comunidades afectadas para que la violencia de este termino sea diluida en su normalización e inclusion en el lenguaje.

– *Marginalized groups, on the other hand, take the word that was implanted in the language and reclaim it so it loses its violent power.* This process still has a political background, but it’s different from the previous one. Because the slur spreads from a derogatory minority to the general majority that holds power and influence (top-down). Whereas the appropriation and creation of inclusive language comes from these discriminated groups, spreading the term from an affected minority to the general majority (bottom-up). Like the example in the video, where “queer” was reclaimed by the affected communities so that the violence of the term would be diluted through its normalization and inclusion in language.

-El concepto de “ellos” y “nosotros” es la parte peligrosa de la discusión sobre estos temas. En general se utiliza la discusión del lenguaje solamente como una oportunidad para invisibilizar a las minorías o muchas veces mayorías explotadas.
Cando las palabras son usadas para alienar o invisibilizar a ciertos grupos, la empatía humana es puesta en juego, utilizando un “reglamento” como es el “uso adecuado del idioma” para ejercer una brecha entre individuos. Siendo el termino “adecuado” dictado otra vez por las burbujas de poder. Ejemplo: cuando alguien comenta que el pronombre “elle” no es español. No esta intentando cuestionar la validez, significado o uso de la palabra. Sino la desaprobación de un termino que da visibilidad a un grupo que no se siente identificado con los géneros de pronombre existentes. La pelea del lenguaje inclusivo nunca es acerca del lenguaje, sino acerca de la inclusión.
Esta esta fomentada en un sistema donde las castas sociales inferiores son incentivadas al conflicto para evitar organización y consciencia social que pueda llegar a una pelea de clases organizada.

– *The concept of “them” and “us” is the dangerous part of the discussion around these topics.* In general, the language debate is used only as an opportunity to make minorities—or often exploited majorities—invisible.  

When words are used to alienate or erase certain groups, human empathy is put on the line, using a “rulebook” like “proper language use” to create a gap between individuals. And again, the definition of “proper” is dictated by power bubbles.  

Example: When someone says the pronoun _elle_ isn’t Spanish. They’re not questioning the validity, meaning, or use of the word. They’re disapproving of a term that gives visibility to a group that doesn’t identify with the existing gendered pronouns. The fight over inclusive language is never about language itself, but about inclusion.  

This is fueled by a system where lower social castes are encouraged to fight each other to prevent organization and social awareness that could lead to an organized class fight.

-El concepto de “masculino” y “femenino” no tiene un uso neutral, ni solo define el “sexo” biologíco. Estos términos son igualmente utilizados como una frontera entre seres humanos. Son una herramienta utilizada para clasificar algo tan simple como la capacidad de engendrar vida en el útero, un termino biológico, dividiéndonos, y así produciendo la ilusión de que una mayoría totalitaria humana no existe, sino que la existencia misma es una dicotomía que nos divide. Generándose asi una dinámica de poder, donde surge un sistema que favorece a una de las dos mitades. En este caso un sistema patriarcal usado por Religiones y Sistemas Politicos.

– *The concept of “masculine” and “feminine” isn’t neutral, nor does it only define biological “sex.”* These terms are also used as a border between human beings. They’re a tool used to classify something as simple as the ability to bear life in the womb—a biological term—dividing us, and thus creating the illusion that a total human majority doesn’t exist, but that existence itself is a dichotomy that splits us. This generates a power dynamic, where a system arises that favors one of the two halves. In this case, a patriarchal system used by Religions and Political Systems.

-Cuando no existe una palabra la inventamos y ya. Así nacieron literalmente todas las palabras habidas y por haber. El lenguaje nos pertenece a todos. Y si quieres privar a alguien de su visibilidad, probablemente sea porque tengas miedo a perder la poca que tu tienes, pero créeme nosotros no somos vuestros enemiges.

– *When a word doesn’t exist, we invent it. That’s literally how all words ever have come to be.* Language belongs to all of us. And if you want to deprive someone of their visibility, it’s probably because you’re afraid of losing the little you have. But believe me, we are not your enemies.

-El concepto “elle” existe en varios Idiomas. No solo en el español, siempre que exista una persona no binaria buscará visibilidad e identidad, sin importar el idioma hablado. En el ingles no existe un “genero de palabras” todo es “the” pero la necesidad de un pronombre es necesario, por ello se reutilizó el “they”. En el aleman los artículos son complejos e incluso mas random que en español, e igualmente a surgido el termino “dey” como pronombre no binario.

– *The concept of “elle” exists in several languages.* Not just in Spanish. Whenever there’s a non-binary person, they’ll seek visibility and identity, no matter what language they speak. In English there’s no grammatical gender for nouns—everything is “the”—but the need for a pronoun still exists, which is why “they” was repurposed. In German the articles are complex and even more random than in Spanish, and the term “dey” has still emerged as a non-binary pronoun.

-Yo soy elle, dey, they, quieras o no. No esta en cuestión mi existencia ni identidad. No necesito la aprobación de nadie. Yo, al igual que tu y cada parlante, dictamos y formamos el idioma cuando lo utilizamos. Yo veo el todo el idioma como el “+” mencionado por Platonto (crack), lo veo como algo fluido. Si la palabra Güisqui puede existir pues yo también.

-Atacar la identidad de alguien, no esta bien. Así de sencillo. Así como cuando aprendes el nombre de alguien, aprende su pronombre como lo haces con el resto de personas que conoces.

-No estaís soles. Mis amiges queer y aliades. No os dejeis ningunear por nadie, pues repito. El idioma es de todes, todas y todos.

– *I am elle, dey, they, whether you like it or not.* My existence and identity aren’t up for debate. I don’t need anyone’s approval. I, like you and every speaker, dictate and shape language when we use it. I see the whole language as the “+” mentioned by Platonto (legend), I see it as something fluid. If the word _whisky_ can exist, then so can I.

– *Attacking someone’s identity isn’t okay. That’s it. Just like when you learn someone’s name, learn their pronouns like you do for everyone else you meet.*

– *You’re not alone.* My queer friends and allies. Don’t let anyone belittle you, because I repeat: language belongs to everyone.
